]]> More than a  million people have taken to the streets of Santiago in the largest protest yet seen in Chile.

Calling for the fall of President Sebastiàn Pinēra the demonstrations are against entrenched inequality and the increased cost of living in Latin America’s most prosperous country.

At least 16 people have died in a week of protests in Chile sparked by an increase in the cost of tickets to the underground railway.

Staff was evacuated from the legislature in the port city of Valapairiso yesterday as protestors tried to force their way into the building. 

The United Nations is sending a fact-finding team to probe the killings – many by police using  live ammunition –  and hundreds of injuries to protestors.
