Corrupt officials in Ghana and Madagascar are allowing millions of the endangered trees to be cut down and sent to furniture makers in China.

It takes more than 100 years for a rosewood tree to grow.

Seven years ago Ghana banned the export of locally grown rosewood.

But since then, the Environmental  Investigation Agency says the 540 000 tons of the commodity – that’s 23 500 containers full – have been sent to China.

The London and Washington-based EIA says corrupt officials allowed the felling six million rosewood trees to enable this amount of trafficking.

Nancy Pelosi says she’s particularly honored to be the first US  Speaker to address the Ghanaian parliament.

She will have talks with Ghana’s President Nana Akufo Addo.

Pelosi  will visit the Elmina fortress from where African slaves, at a rate of 30 000 a year,  began their one-way journey into servitude in America.

Pelosi is also visiting the US Army’s Africa Headquarters in Rome.

The delegation traveling her with includes Somali-born Congresswoman Ilhan Omar – one of the Democratic representatives urged by President Donald Trump last week to go back to where they came from

Diplomats from that country say African foreign ministers have made the decision to be inked by their leaders at their summit starting in Niger today.

The ultimate goal of the African Free Trade Agreement, which will come into force at the AU summit in Niamey, is to remove trade barriers and tariffs between the 55 members of the continental bloc.

For the time being, they will work on reducing high transport cost and cumbersome customs regimes that stop African countries trading with each other.

When all AU members are signed up the agreement will encompass a market of 1,2 billion people.

It was a mixture of pomp and ceremony and warm family emotion in Accra today as Kofi Annan was finally laid to rest.

The man, who devoted  his career to the United Nations and  gave his life to making peace, was sent on his final journey by his wife Nane who said he was an inspiration to the world.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate was hailed as a special father and husband and an outstanding human being

Kweku Adoboli, who left Ghana when he was 4-years-old, say the British authorities are being racist.

Kweku Adoboli served half of a seven year sentence for losing R35 billion in risky trade in the City of London for the Swiss Bank UBS.

Britain automatically deports foreigners sentenced to more than four years in prison.

The Home Office says foreigners who abuse British hospitality should be in no doubt of their determination to deport them, adding that 42 800 have been removed since 2010.

Adoboli, who was given a student visa on arrival in Britain, has never applied for British citizenship.

Reporters Without Borders lists Ghana highest on the continent with Eritrea at the bottom of the 182 countries judged

Every year, Reporters Without Borders questions experts on the independence, pluralism, media environment, self-censorship, transparency and legislative framework of the media in their countries.

Its 2018 list is again topped by Norway.

Ghana, in 23rd place overall,  beats Namibia this year to the top African spot.

Eritrea has the poorest showing among African countries while North Korea is last on the international ranking.

Refusing job applications with bleached skin and stretch marks is dismissed by rights groups in Ghana as sexist and unfair.

Most anger is directed at penalising  those with stretch marks.

Candidates face a medical check as part of the immigration service recruitment process.

More than 84 000 people paid the equivalent of R120 for an application for only to learn the service is recruiting no more than 500 people.
