Washington-based Human Rights Watch is pressing Kenyan authorities to bring to book police who killed at least six people enforcing the dusk to dawn curfew designed to slow the COVID 19 pandemic.

It is further alleged police extorted money and stole food in addition to using excessive force.

The victims include a 13-year-old boy shot in the stomach while standing on his balcony;

A tomato seller killed when he was hit  by a tear gas canister; and

An accountant beaten to death in a pub.

Police were always going to have a tough time enforcing a curfew on Keyans who like to thank themselves for working hard by having a few drinks.

In Nairobi alone they were arresting 300 people a week for curfew breaking.

Human Rights Watch maintains they unnecessarily used too much lethal force.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has raised a storm saying he’ll put a bottle of  brandy into every food parcel for the city’s poor.

Medical experts have angrily denied his claim that the alcohol will kill coronavirus.

Mike Sonko, who sports  flashing clothing and wears lots of gold, is no stranger to controversy.

He say he’ll put a bottle of brandy, naming the brand of the expensive Cognac, into each food parcel for medicinal reasons.

Medical experts  say his opinion should be binned with the contaminated face masks.

Brandy does not have enough alcohol to even sanitize one’s hands.

Sonko was arrested last December for corruption.

President Uhuru Keyatta barred him from his office premises in February because of missing public money,

East Africa and the Horn are being hit by a new generation of locusts 400 times stronger than the swarms that descended last June

Kenyan farmers are posting pictures of swarms like the Biblical plague, so large that they block out the sun.

ends intro

The desert locusts have hit  eight African countries where at least 20 million people are food insecure because of the three deadly ‘C.s’ : conflict, climate change and COVID 19.

In addition to Kenya they include Somalia, Uganda, South Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Sudan,

They have stayed and produced a new generation because of favorable conditions including above-average rainfall.

Pesticide to eradicate or at least thin them has been blocked by the coronavirus lockdown.

The swarms generally number 150 million per square kilometer, devouring every leaf where they land. Driven by the wind they can travel 150 kilometers a day.

Kenyan MPs, who are among the best-paid legislators in the world, are consulting over whether to take a pay cut to help the fight against the COVID 19 pandemic.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has led the way by taking an 80% reduction in salary.

ends intro

Determining their own salaries, Kenyan MPs have become far and away the best-paid African legislators.

With generous allowances they pull down more than a quarter of a million rand a month.

President Uhuru Kenyatta says four fifths of his salary will be redirected to fighting COVID19,

The same goes for his deputy. His Cabinet members and their assistants are taking a 30% pay cut.

The MP’s responded to calls last year for a 35% cut public servants salaries……..by voting themselves a pay increase.

German authorities are looking for six million protective masks they say have gone missing in Kenya.

The airports authority say the masks never arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the German claim is fake news.

It isn’t clear why the masks, produced by a German manufacturer, were sent to the German army via Kenya.

The German government has not paid any money in the transaction.

The German authorities are investigating whether this was theft at the Kenyan airport or the manufacturer deciding it was more profitable to sell the masks elsewhere.

The Kenyan Health Ministry has refused to comment on the missing equipment.

The COVID19 pandemic has made protective masks a valuable commodity traded like rare spices or minerals.

African sports stars politicians and citizens of the mountain kingdom have fallen victim to official travel bans imposed because of the coronavirus.

Nine African countries have reported cases of COVID 19 with two deaths on the continent from the virus.

A month-long international travel ban has been placed on Kenya’s sports stars.

This particularly affects road runners as the lucrative European season approaches.

The current ban ends before the London and Boston marathons. So athletes like world record holder Eliud Kipchoge are hoping the scare is quickly over.

Ghana and Gabon have stopped their officials from traveling abroad until the coronavirus  all- clear is sounded.

Lesotho this week  stopped foreign travel for its citizens to avoid spreading COVID19

Poachers  have killed two extremely rare white giraffe in Northern Kenya.

Authorities who found the bodies say there is just one white giraffe left in the wild.

The killing of the giraffe cow and her calf about four months ago leaves only one bull in the Ishaqbrini Hirola conservancy.

It is named for the extremely rare Hirola antelope also found there.

Two white giraffe were spotted in 2017.

A second calf was born last year.

The animals do not have albanism.

Their condition known as leucism leaves them almost devoid of pigmentation but with dark eyes.

Manager of the conservancy Mohammed Ahmdenoor says the killings have gravely damaged a bid to save a unique species found nowhere else in the world.

Thousands have a packed a stadium in Nairobi for the funeral of Kenya’s longest-serving president.

Daniel Arap Moi’s body was brought in on a gun carriage with the military heavily to the fore in the event celebrating the life of the 95-year old who died last week.

Critics of Daniel Arap Moi’s 24-year presidency call him authoritarian.

Admirers say he brought stability at a time Kenya badly needed it.

His tenure from 1978 to 2002 saw multi-party democracy restored and the rough handling of plotters in a failed coup.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has called Moi the father of the nation and a champion of Pan Africanism.

Moi came to power after the death of Kenyatta’s father Jomo who was Kenya’s first president.

Kenya’s military has taken control of the funeral home where the body of former President Daniel Arap Moi was brought after his death yesterday.

Medical specialists have moved in to perform a post mortem on the 95-year-old.

Deputy President William Ruto has delivered a warm tribute to Kenya’s longest-serving president.

“His genuine concern, selflessness, loyalty and sincerity enabled hi to acquire staying power and attract the the support of millions of patriots,” said Ruth.

Daniel Arap Moi’s heritage might be more harshly judged by his opponents whom he treated ruthlessly.

He brought multi-party democracy to Kenya, but his autocratic style – in a famous 1984 address he insisted that the nation should sing his songs – earned him critics at home and abroad.

He will be given a state funeral. His family have yet to agree on a date

At least 14 primary schoolchildren were crushed to death in a stampede as they left classes for the day.

Another 40 were injured, some of them critically.

It is not clear what caused the stampede as pupils left the Kakamega primary school north west of Nairobi yesterday.

Authorities are investigating reports that they jammed into as narrow stairway that collapsed.

Some of the victims fell three stories.

Education Minister George Mogoha confirmed the deaths and vowed the cause would be established.

It has raised concerns about the safety of children in Kenyan schools.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has called for a swift investigation.

The local hospital had to be cordoned off because anxious parents stormed it to get details about their children.
