The death sentence handed down a Mauritanian blogger for blasphemy has been commuted.

Mohamed Mkhatir will be released after four years in jail awaiting trial for dishonoring the name of the Prophet Mohamed.

ends intro

Amnesty International says the release of Mohamed Mkhaïtir, is a day of triumph for him and his family, as well as all those who campaigned on his behalf since 2014.

The human rights watchdog says the ruling by the Appeal Court  in Nouakchott provides a golden opportunity for the Mauritanian authorities to change tack on this sensitive issue and halt their brutal crackdown on human rights activists. It calls on authorities to release Moussa Biram and Abdallahi Matallah the two anti-slavery activists currently jailed in a remote prison where they have spent nearly 500 days .
