Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will be buried in Cairo this afternoon in a small military funeral.

It is not clear whether President AbdelFatah el Sisi and other Arab leaders will attend.

The controversy over the funeral of Hosni Mubarak, who died in a Cairo military hospital yesterday, aged 91, indicates that his death has not  brought closure on a dark era of Egyptian history.

A former air force commander and hero of the 1973 war against Israel – hence the military funeral – Mubarak’s legacy is debatable.

As president for 30 years before his overthrow in 2011 he was hugely influential in the region and a staunch ally of the West.

But his regime was enormously divided. Human rights abuses abounded as did corruption and economic stagnation.

Many Egyptians argue they are still getting over the damaging effects of his presidency.

Security tops the agenda in talks at the White House today between Presidents Donald Trump and Egypt’s Abdelfatah El Sisi.

The visitor is seeking his hosts approval for extending his term limit – possibly until 2034.

US President Donal Trump is not concerned that his Egyptian counterpart Abdelfatah El Sisi, who took power in a 2013 coup,  is proving to be more oppressive that Hosni Mubarak who was unseated in the Arab Spring.

Trump’s  America first approach seeks to use Egypt’s role a lynchpin of regional security.

He’s looking to build on robust military, economic and counter-terrorism co-operation.

When El Sisi visited the White House previously two years ago, Trump told him he was doing a fantastic job and America is very much behind him.

Nothing’s changed.

President Jacob Zuma’s in Lunada for today’s  inauguration of Angola’s new President  Joao Lourenco.

He’s one of 26 invited heads of state, a dozen of whom have already arrived.

Angola’s foreign affairs department says Russian President Vladimir Putin, British premier Theresa May, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Egyptian leader Abdelfatah El Sisi have been to the inauguration …

…that will bring Luanda to a stop today.

A raft of African leaders have already arrived in Angola.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame touched down shortly before his South Africa  counterpart Jacob Zuma last night.

Zuma’s expressed the desire to have relations established during the liberation struggles in both countries translate into significant bilateral trade and investment.

In addition to meeting with President Joao Lourenco, Zumas will see outgoing president Jose Eduardo Dos Santos and have bilateral meetings with a number of African peers.
