Tory MP Crispin Blunt, who heads Britain’s Independent Detention Review Panel, visited Moursi last year and warned that denying the man with chronic ailments  proper medical care was sentencing him to a premature death.

The forces of rebel leader Khalifa Haftar have been driven back in their advance on the Libyan capital Tripoli.

Egypt’s President Abdelfattah El Sisi, who hosted the AU summit on the Libyan crisis, is a supporter of Haftar.

So it is not surprising that his guests were pressed to call for a ceasefire rather than endorse the United Nations-backed government of Fayez Al Serraj who was hoping for some support from the summit.

There’s  distinct rift in the world organization over the man said to be driving Libya to civil war.

France and United States have shown support for Haftar.

He was speaking at the end of a summit conference he hosted on the Sudan cricis, attended by President Cyril Ramaphosa and four other Africa heads of state.

The decision taken at the Cairo summit removes the April 30 deadline imposed by the African Union on Sudanese leaders who deposed President Omar Al Bashir in a coup 12 days ago.

Under AU regulations, Sudan faces exclusion from the continental body for implementing an unconstitutional change of government.

The summit declared Africa’s desire to find a comprehensive democratic system.

This must embolden the generals who have already ordered the pro-democracy demonstrators to remove their barricades outside military headquarters in Khartoum.

At least five other heads of government will join deliberations on Africa’s two most troubling issues.

It’s in his capacity as rotating chair of the African Union that Egypt’s President Abdelfattah El Sisi has called the summits.

AU commission chair Moussa Faki will be there along with the Presidents of Chad, Djibouti, Rwanda, DRC and Somalia.

Five more African countries are sending foreign ministers or special advisers.

On Sudan they’ll consider how best to back stability and peace following the coup ousting Omar Al Bashir easier this month.

With rebel-led fighting around Tripoli, the African leaders will seek ways of dealing with the Libyan crisis and eradicate the terrorism fueling the conflict.

Parliament earlier this week voted overwhelmingly to extend the President’s term for two year and then to allow him a further term of six years.

Amnesty International is one of a few critical voices in Egypt where the outcome of a referendum extending President Abdelfattah El Sisi’s term in office if a foregone conclusion.

It fears El Sisi will further curb freedom of speech, suppress opposition political parties and crackdown on the independent media.

Of the 554 MPs who voted, 531 gave the nod to the President.

The referendum is also expected to endorse the President getting increased power in a reformed Senate where he will personally nominate a third of the members.
