The Abuja  Government has yet to respond to to a report by Human Rights Watch of widespread abuse of mental health patients in Nigeria.

The international watchdog’s calling for the development of community-based services to provide traditionally expensive care to mental health patients by cash-strapped authorities.

Human Rights Watch staff  visit 28 institutions including state-run, religious and private facilities in Nigeria.

They found patients both men and women aged between eight years and 82 year were being chained, beaten and starved.

This has caused public outcry for chaining of mental health patients to be officially banned.

how is calling for a full investigation into all mental health facilities in Nigeria to ensure that their disturbing findings  are not more widespread.
