Zambian President Edgar Lungu is travelling to South Africa for throat surgery.

He collapsed while making a speech in Lusaka on Saturday, suffering from narrowing of the oesophagus.

President Edgar Lungu spoke to reporters in Lusaka today saying he was moving directly to South Africa for tests, and if necessary surgery.

He told them he hopes to come back alive because no-one wants to die.

When he collapsed last Saturday, his office blamed malaria.

It’s emerged he’s suffering from achalasia which is a narrowing of the oesophagus.

The 58 year old was treated for this 30 years ago.

Zambians are understandably on edge.

In the past six years they have had two presidents die in foreign hospitals – despite their reassurances that they were well.
