]]> Algeria’s military chief Ahmed Gaid Salhi has called for President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to be impeached on medical grounds.

His statement appears to be the final nail in the political coffin of the 82 year-old who has been in power for 20 years.

After weeks of protest, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who’s been reclusive since suffering a stroke in 2013, agreed not to stand for a fifth presidential term.

He postponed elections due this month and indicated he would stay at the helm until Algeria gets a new constitution.

That’s not good enough for the protestors demanding that he stand down now.

With the support of the military for Bouteflika’s departure, Algeria’s Constitutional Council might feel emboldened to vote for his impeachment.
