Pro-democracy demonstrators in Khartoum say there’s a growing danger of a military crackdown against their weeks long sit-in outside the Sudanese military headquarters.

The country’s military rulers accuse them of threatening the coherence of the state and its national security.

Military spokesman General Bahar Ahmed Bahar gave it to protestors with both barrels when he appeared on state television.

The army chiefs who ousted President Omar Al Bashir in a coup initially promised not to use force against the protestors who had weakened his position.

Now they’re threatening to deal with what they call unruly elements.

General Bahar says the sit-in calling for civilian rule is  unsafe and posing a threat to the revolution and revolutionaries.

The Transitional Military Council has closed down the Khartoum office of the news channel Al Jazeera without giving any reasons for the action.

An Egyptian-born television journalist working for Al Jazeera is suing his employer for $100 million claiming the network’s negligence landed him in jail.

Mohamed Fahmy, who spent more than 400 days in a Cairo prison on charges of aiding a terrorist organisation, suggests Al Jazeera’s actions supporting the banned Muslim Brotherhood put him behind bars.

Mohamed Fahmy and two colleagues Baher Mohamed and Peter Greste were originally sentenced to seven to 10 years in prison on charges that included spreading lies to help a terrorist organization, a reference to the Muslim Brotherhood.

All three insist they were merely doing their jobs as journalists.

In January, a court ordered a retrial, citing procedural flaws.

Greste, an Australian, was freed and deported.

Fahmy is a naturalised Canadian who gave up his Egyptian citizenship. He has filed his suit in a Canadian court.

Mohamed Fahmy, one of three Al Jazeera jouralists jailed for supporting the banned Muslim Brotherhood has renounced his Egyptian citizenship and will be released shortly.

This from Canadian officials waiting to take him to the country where he has joint citizenship.

Mohammed Fahmy will be deported from Egypt like his Australian colleague Peter Greste.

The authorities have opted to boot them out rather than send for them retrial for spreading lies and supporting a banned organisation.

It remains to be seen what will be done with Egyptian journalist Baher Mohammed who was jailed with them 400 days ago.

All three insist they were just doing their jobs.

Fahmy’s family say surrendering his Egyptian citizenship was a tough decision for a man from a family with a strong military background.

But this is an absolute condition of his release.

Relatives of the Australian journalist Peter Greste have expressed their delight at his being freed and deported by Egyptian authorities.

They’ve thanked all those who played a part in this and vowed to continue pressing for similar treatment for his two Egyptian colleagues from the Al Jazeera channel.

Peter Greste is on his way home to Australia. His colleagues Mohammed Fahmy and Baher Mohammed are still imprisoned in Egypt.

They’ve been behind bars for 400 days.

Their conviction for supporting the banned Muslim Brotherhood was overturned and a new trial ordered.

This gave Cairo authorities the window to deport Greste.

The journalists insist they were only doing their jobs as does the Qatar-based television chain that employs them.

Al Jazzera says the two other correspondents must also be released

There’s growing international condemnation of the seven year-jail sentences given to three journalists for allegedly spreading lies about Egypt and supporting the now illegal Muslim Brotherhood.

Amnesty International’s declared the three to be prisoners of conscience. Canberra has expressed anger. One of the three is an Australian citizen.

The three journalists, who’ve been held since last year are paying for who they represent rather than what they have said.

Peter Greste, Mohamed Fatmi and Bahir Mohamed represent Al Jazeera, the network perceived by the Cairo government of President Abdul Fatah Al Sisi as supporting the Muslim Brotherhood who’s government he overthrew as Egypt’s military commander last year.

Former journalist, Australian premier Tony Abbot, maintains Greste is innocent of the charges against him.
