A deadly pair of car bombs has has killed 11 people in Mogadishu.

The attacks in Somalia, that left 25 people wounded, is being blamed on the Al Shabaab terror group.

The first of the bombs exploded at military checkpoint near the Presidential Palac which a frequent target of jihadis.

Nine people were killed in that blast.

A second explosion  appears to have killed the suicide bomber and his accomplice near the airport which houses the offices of a number of diplomatic missions.

Al Shabaab is responsible for the truck bomb in October  2017 that killed more than 500 people.

It was the deadliest extremist operation  since the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States in 2001.

President Barak Obama says security cooperation with Ethiopia is pushing back against violent extremism.

He says Ethiopia faces serious threats and its contribution to the African Union mission in Somalia has reduced areas under al-Shabaab control.

Sunday’s hotel bombing in Mogadishu reminds us that terrorist groups like al-Shabaab offer nothing but death and destruction and have to be stopped.

Before heading home today, the first sitting US President to visit Ethiopia will address the African Union at its headquarters in Addis Ababa – another first.

Kenya’s interior minister admits security officers ignored intelligence reports prior to the attack on Garissa University College earlier this month.

The minister, who is in charge of security, also admitted that the response was poorly co-ordinated.

The mea culpa from Kenya’s Interior Minister Joseph Nkarissery follows the worst terror attack in that country by the Somali based Al Shabab militants who killed 148 people during the day-long siege at the campus in the north-eastern town.

Following a wave of public anger over the obvious security failings, Nkarissery suspended seven policemen.

The students had received memos warning of possible violence and the principal of Garissa University College asked in vain for additional security at the campus.

Most of those who died in the raid were students.

The attackers singled out Christians to be killed and spared Muslims.

Explosions and gunfire can be heard from a university dormitory in the north eastern Kenyan town of Garissa.

Police and defence forces stormed in after the attack by masked gunmen in the early hours as morning prayers began at the college mosque..

Al Shabab is believed to be responsible for the attack.

There’s no indication of fatalities although local media’s reporting two policemen and a student have been injured.

A pall of smoke hangs over the dormitory and students could be seen running from the building in their pyjamas.

There are unconfirmed reports of students being taken hostage.

The area has come under frequent attack from Al Shabab avenging Kenya’s involvement in the multinational force supporting the government in Somalia.

Days after surviving the sixth of half a dozen assassination bids against him, the governor of northern Kenya’s Mandera county describes the security situation in the area under his control as hopeless.

Ali Roba questions why Kenyan soldiers are part of an African Union force propping up the Somali government – leaving their own country unprotected to a wave of cross-border attacks by al-Shabab militants.

Last Friday, Ali Roba’s convoy was attacked in Mandera leaving three dead.

It was one of a string of recent attacks by the al-Qaeda-linked militants.

Roba says the public isn’t fooled by assurances that security is being beefed up and will do what they have to do unless the national government stops the attacks.

In November, al Shabab gunmen held up a bus outside Mandera town, separated passengers according to religion and executed 28 non-Muslims.

Ten days later 36 non-Muslim quarry workers were also massacred in the area.

In the past month it’s killed 64 singling out non Muslims before shooting them.

The government’s involved in a heated debate over a controversial new security bill aimed at fighting militants.

Its critics are accusing it of using the threat posed by Al-Shabab to curb democratic freedoms

Officials say the organisations have been de-registered because of their failure to submit financial records.

15 are accused of direct links with terrorist organisations.

Their victims number at least 64.
This morning’s slaying of the   quarry workers was particularly gruesome.

In the killings early this morning, the attackers descended on workers asleep in their tents.
Once again again pulled aside non Muslims for execution.
Earlier they’d killed one person in  a bar.
Kenya’s Red Cross says security personnel and one of its own teams are on the ground at the site of the attack.
Al-Shabab has stepped up attacks in Kenya since 2011, when Kenya sent troops across the border to help battle the militants.

Kenyan police have raided mosques suspected of having links with the Al Shabab terror group.

One person has died in the action in Mombasa and 200 arrested.

Kenya blames the Somali-based alQaeda offshoot for a number of attacks along its coastline.

Targeting the a Musa and Sakina mosques in the port city, police moved in early yesterday.

They say they had information that an attack on security forces was being planned in the mosques.

A 20 year shot dead had been reportedly trying to throw a grenade at officers who recovered eight grenades, a pistol, ammunition, machetes and daggers in the place of worship.

They also seized warfare literature and videos of Osama Bin Laden and Kenyan preachers advocating violence.

Civil rights groups say authorities are unfairly targeting and marginalising Muslims.
