United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has called for countries to financial support the five-nation military group fighting Islamist extremism in the Sahel.

He says million will be affected if  the continuous downward security spiral is not broken.

In August, the UN Security Council adopted a French resolution establishing a 5000- strong force to counter jihadi fighters in the Sahel.

The Trump administration gave it the nod after assurances that Washington would not have to pick up the tab.

Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad are all supplying troops.

More than a  year ago, Canada promised to contribute $450 million to the peacekeeping operation in Mali – acknowledged as the most dangerous on earth – and to supply 600 troops and 150 police,.

Asked about the delay, Canada responds that it’s waiting for the opportune moment.
