]]> Large numbers of pro government troops have been moved into the Ethiopia capital Addis Ababa and Amhara state following an attempted coup at the weekend.

The mastermind behind that plot was killed as he emerged from hiding in Amhara.

The US State Department has warned its personnel in Ethiopia to stay indoors until the threat of violence decreases.

General Asaminew Tsige, who was released after nine years in prison by an amnesty declared by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, is suspected of being a ringleader of the coup plotters. 

He as killed by troops yesterday and no information has been offered by authorities.

Army chief Seare Mekonnen and Amhara governor Ambachew Mekonnen, both recently appointed by Ahmed, were killed by their bodyguards at the weekend.
