Two military bases in northeast Nigeria have been sacked by terror group Boko Haram pressing for control of the strategic town of Baga on Lake Chad.

Jihadists struck the bases that host units from Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

Troops at the two bases were overpowered and forced to withdraw, leaving the terrorists to carry off  guntrucks, ammunition and multiple rocket launchers.

Boko Haram tried unsuccessfully to overrun a third base to which the troops withdrew.

The troops avoided risking  ambush by not pursuing the withdrawing Boko Haram fighters.

Nigerian reinforcements backed by fighter jets are in pursuit of the jihadi  fighters.

The area is a stronghold of the terrorist Islamic State West Africa Province being battled by trop[s from Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

Several children are among the 68 people massacred by Boko Haram militants in the northeastern Nigerian village of Njaba.

Witnesses say the children were deliberately targeted by the terrorists who destroyed the village by fire.

Ends intro

Boko Haram fighters are redoubling their efforts in the weeks running up the country’s most important election in decades.

The militants are amassing in the strategic town of Gwoza against a possible fight-back by military forces.

The atrocity in Njaba, some 50 kilometres from the Borno state capital Maiduguri, is aimed at vigilantes opposing the jihadis.

Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger are engaged in a joint operation against the Islamists, who have captured swathes of territory in the northeast and also begun cross-border attacks.

The military says it’s recaptured of several key towns, including Baga, on the shores of Lake Chad.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan’s made a surprise visit to the north-east of the country in the aftermath of massacres by Boko Haram militants.

He tells refugees he’s been assured by his security chiefs that all the areas under the control of Boko Haram will soon be recaptured.

On his first visit to the region since March 2013, President Goodluck Jonathan spent three hours on the ground in the Borno State capital, Maiduguri.

He met soldiers, wounded troops and visited a camp for thousands of displaced people whom he assured would soon be back in their homes

Some 5000 people from Baga in northern Borno, which was attacked on 3 January, are being helped in the a camp in Maiduguri, says medical charity Doctors Without Borders.

Boko Haram’s attack on Baga is feared to have killed hundreds, if not more, in an upsurge in violence likely aimed at further undermining the legitimacy of presidential elections next month.

Boko Haram’s seized control of a town and multinational military base on Nigeria’s north eastern border with Chad.

Many residents of the fishing town of Baga on Lake Chad have fled into the neighbouring country seeking shelter.

Over the past two years, Baga has suffered several attacks from Boko Haram.

Medical charity Doctors Without Borders was forced to close its clinic in Baga because their personnel were under persistent attack.

There was a Massacre in 2013 by Boko Haram seeking young men hiding from the insurgents.

This time they overpowered soldiers of the Multinational Joint Task Force and wrecked property

A number of people are reported drowned on Lake Chad trying to escape the terrorists.
