They were covering the aftermath of the army’s removal of Mohamed Morsi from the presidency in July 2013.

All three insist they were just doing their jobs.

Fahmy’s family say surrendering his Egyptian citizenship was a tough decision for a man from a family with a strong military background.

But this is an absolute condition of his release.

As a human right lawyer, the wife of actor George Clooney represents one of the three Al Jazeera journalists jailed and facing retrial for supporting the banned Muslim Brotherhood.

Amal Clooney acts for Baher Mohammed who, with Mohammed Fahmy and Peter Greste have been jailed for a year.

They were sentenced to between seven and ten years imprisonment for, they insist, merely doing their jobs as journalists.

Clooney’s report on behalf of the International Bar Association says Egypt’s judicial system is not as independent as it should be.

It allows Egyptian officials to handpick judges, known to dispense particularly brutal verdicts, for political cases.

She wanted to release the report in Cairo but was warned against doing so on pain of arrest.

Clooney says the flaws in the judicial system will compromise the integrity of the journalists’ retrial.

The Court of Cassation sat for only a few minutes hearing the appeal.

Peter Greste, Mohammed Fahmy and Baher Mohammed maintain they were doing their jobs after Egypt’s military overthrew President Mohamed Moursi who had won internationally endorsed elections for the brotherhood.

Greste and Fahmy are serving seven years, Mohammed has a ten-year stretch because a bullet casing was found among his possessions.

Human rights groups and a number of Western governments have deplored the journalists’ arrest 13 months ago and the sentences.

The journalists do not appear to have been in court for the appeal.
