]]> Interpol raids across north and west Africa have rescued 500 victims of human trafficking and netted 40 suspects who will be brought to court.

The raids have been sponsored by a German government crackdown on organized crime.

Half of the victims freed by the Interpol operation are children.

Those arrested are accused of forcing their victims into begging and prostitution and face charges including human trafficking, forced labour and child exploitation.

In one case, a 16-year-old girl was duped into thinking she would be working in Mali but was instead made to go into sex work to pay back her travel costs to a sponsor.

The raids were conducted in Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal.
