Senegal’s cancelled celebrations marking its 60 anniversary of independence from France because of the COVID 19 pandemic.

The West African country is playing a leading role in fighting the spread of the virus.

In addition to closing its land sea and air borders, Senegal is focusing on potential COVID 19 infections.

Following the World Health Organisation’s instruction to test, test and test, Senegal is working with a British company its on developing a R20 test for infection by the virus that will take only nine minutes to reveal a result.

Senegal is controversially also working on using the anti-malarial drug chloroquine to treat infection.

The country has 44 confirmed cases of COVID 19 with 60 recoveries  and one death.

OXFAM’s making a $1,6 billion appeal to help fight the COVD19 pandemic in poor and war-torn countries.The British-based humanitarian organisation says it’s asking for less than 10% of the financial stimulus the rich countries will pay their citizens.ends intro Oxfam fears COVID 19 is outpacing the global response to the pandemic.The countries torn by conflict, poverty and climate change are at greatest risk.They have three billion  people living in crowded slums and refugee camps and without access to clean water.The majority of these vulnerable people are women who make up 70% of health care workers and the majority of people providing unpaid care.Oxfam says the rich countries have to do more to help these people.

British, American and Irish diplomats are working to secure the release of a group of pilots, grounded by Ethiopian authorities during an attempt to fly the length of down Africa Cape Town  in vintage planes.

Their job is complicated by the Ethiopian authorities confiscating the planes and computer tables from the aviators

The vintage planes landed in Gambella near Ethiopia’s border with South Sudan.

The Ethiopian authorities kept them there, preventing them from going to their hotels.

Britain’s Foreign Office is talking to other embassies and negotiating on their behalf.

The pilots are from 10 different countries.

They include husband-and-wife teams, fathers and daughters and entire families trying  to fly more than 13 000 kms  down Africa in old aircraft that were designed for short-haul flights.

They’re planning to cross 10 countries end up in Cape Town mid-December.

Gunmen have targeted a museum in the centre of the Tunisian capital, killing at least seven foreign tourists and a local and taking eight hostages

The attack was carried out on the Bardo museum next to the Tunisian parliament as MPs debated anti-terrorism legislation.

Local radio in Tunis’s saying the victims include British, Italian, French and Spanish nationals .

Interior ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui says it involves two or more terrorists wearing military uniforms and armed with AK 47s

Most of the tourists were evacuated but some are still believed to be inside.

Security forces had entered the museum famed for its collection of antiquities.

Hundreds of tourists were on their way there when the attack began at lunchtime.
