President Cyril Ramaphosa and the regional groupie SADC appear to have jumped the gun congratulating Felix Tshisekedi as president-elect of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Their statements come ahead of the arrival in Kinshasa of a delegation from the African Union that says there are serious doubts about the result of the Presidential poll in Congo.

The statements from President Cyril Ramaphosa and SADC come after the Constitutional Court in the DRC threw out an appeal against the provisional election result by Martin Fayulu who claims to have won more than twice the 34,8% of votes allocated to  him by the electoral commission.

The African Union joins France, Belgium and the Catholic Bishops in expressing serious doubts about the commission’s figures.

It remains to be seen if the continental body will recognize Tshisikedi if, as planned, he is inaugurated within 10 days.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has noted the provisional result of the DRC Presidential poll released by that country’s electoral commission.

He urges the commission know as CENI to complete the process to ensure the credibility of the election and maintaining stability.

Diplomats note that President Cyril Ramaphosa has not congratulated Felix Tshisekedi who was named as Congo’s next president.

Ramaphosa’s playing his cards cautiously. South Africa’s  increasingly drawn into the DRC imbroglio given its mediation history in that country.

He too is waiting for the Catholic bishops to comment on the provisional results that pre-election favorite Martin Fayulu has called an electoral coup.

South Africa will be in the spotlight at the United Nations Security Council tomorrow.

France has called  for the meeting on the DRC and its Foreign Minister Yves le Drian says the provisional results from the DRC don’t tally with results from polling stations.

There are fears of fresh political violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo where President Joseph Kabila’s decision to stay in power after his democratic mandate ends tomorrow.

Security forces patrolled the streets of Kinshasa after the suspension of last-ditch talks to find a peaceful way out of the nation’s political crisis.

No elections have been planned in the DRC and President Joseph Kabila shows no inclination to step down.

Talks are due to resume on Wednesday when Catholic bishops acting as mediators return from a long-planned trip to Rome – a days after Kabila’s mandate ends

Roadblocks have been put up and security forces were posted in large numbers in opposition strongholds and other flashpoints around Kinshasa.
