The Catholic Church has ventured into the stormy political arena of the Democratic Republic of Congo, supporting protests against President Joseph Kabila extending his rule.

The church is calling on people to peacefully oppose his move to delay presidential elections until a census is held.

Protests against President Joseph Kabila clinging to power beyond the two-term constitutional limit as president has cost at least 28 lives.

These have been the worst riots in the capital, Kinshasa, since the unrest in 2011 following Kabila’s second election victory.

The DRC hasn’t had a reliable census since independence from Belgium in 1960.

Kabila’s government says a census is vital for free and fair elections.

The opposition says government is using this to delay the poll so that he can hang on to power.
