The Institute for Security Studies has heard that by 2030 South Africa should have at least two of the eight nuclear reactors it plans to buy.

Financial constraints and security considerations could however retard the only African country currently  using nuclear power for peaceful means expanding this facility.

Ends intro

Anton Khlupkov director of the Moscow-based Centre for Energy and Security Studies says nuclear-generate energy is slightly cheaper than power produced from diesel generators in Africa.

South Africa heads half a dozen other African countries planning  to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

South Africa’s ideal is to have between six and eight plants generating power 15 years from now.

Russia wants to provide these, but Khlupkov  does not believe South Africa’s membership of the BRICS grouping of emerging economies in any way restricts it going elsewhere to buy new reactors.
