No new date’s been given for the Liberian run-off presidential election scheduled for today but delayed when the Supreme Court ordered an investigation into alleged irregularities in last month’s poll.

Continental and regional partners have been called in to mediate.

Football star George Weah won Liberia’s presidential election to fill the seat vacated by Africa’s first elected woman President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

But he does not have an outright majority, so today’s run-off was scheduled with Joseph Boakai.

Boakai has supported third-placed Charles Brumskine’s allegations of electoral fraud.

The Supreme Court has ordered the electoral commission urgently and expeditiously to investigate these claims.

Meanwhile the country remains in limbo until a new run-off date can be determined.

Liberia’s supreme court’s postponed the run-off presidential election scheduled for next Tuesday.

It’s investigating allegations of irregularities by Charles Brumskine who ended up in third place after the October 10 poll.

Liberia’s first independently run election since the end of its civil war 14 years ago left football star George Weah and Vice President Joseph Boakai in first and second place.

Neither has attracted an outright majority, necessitating a run off.

Third-placed Charles Brumskine, who’s out of the running,  alleges there was fraud.

The supreme court’s ordered an  investigation of these and other  charges and maintains there won’t be enough time to complete this by next week.

Electoral commission officials have been ordered to appear in court today

Liberia’s set for a run-off after the presidential election six days ago.

With less than five percent of the votes left to tally, former football star George Weah and Vice President  Joseph Boakai has secured a lead over the 18 other candidates – but not enough for an outright win.

They’ve both scored world firsts for Liberia.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is standing down as Africa’s first elected woman president.

George Weah, fighting to succeed her, was the first African to win football Ballon D’Or award.

Weah has 39 percent of the vote in the first round last Tuesday.

Vice President Joseph Boakai is ten points behind him.

They’ll be the contestants in next month’s run-off.

At least one of the beaten candidates Charles Brumskine is alleging electoral fraud.

Former international football star George Weah has taken the lead in provisional results announced from Liberia’s presidential election.

However Arsene Wenger, who manages the London football team Arsenal, has jumped the gun in congratulating his former player on becoming president.

George Weah and Vice President Joseph Boakai lead the pack of 20 contenders in the race to replace Africa’s first elected woman president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

It seem unlikely either will win the clear majority required for an outright victory.

So a run-off is on the cards for next month.

The election has been plagued by irregularities, according to local media.

Liberal Party leader Charles Brumskine threatens legal action if the Independent Electoral  Commission does not cease publishing provisional results.

ends intro

Local media puts former football star George Weah and Vice President Joseph Boakai in the lead for the presidential race.

The National Elections Commission was expected to release preliminary results today.

Liberty Party national chairman Benjamin Sanvee says they’re deeply troubled by the discovery of numerous incidents of irregularities and fraud that occurred during the elections.

He threatens to take appropriate legal action if the election commission does not halt further announcements of election results.
