President Cyril Ramaphosa is among  scores of African leaders attended the summit that opened in the Russian resort of Sochi this morning.

President VladimirPutin has made it a priority to revive that substantial ties that Russia had with Africa during its Soviet period.

Russia acknowledges it has some catching up to do in rebuilding ties with Africa.

Vladimir Putin’s taking a leaf from the Chinese book in saying relations will not be affected by human rights or other considerations.

He’s promising to back African solutions to African problems.

Russia will look to building diplomatic and political ties with Africa, boosting defense and security co-operation, increasing economic assistance, backing disease control efforts and providing  educational and vocational training and stepping with humanitarian relief assistance

Home Affairs Minister has spelled out a raft of measures designed to relax South Africa’s visa regime that has repelled tourists, skilled workers, investors and business executives.

He’s responded to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s assertion that making it easier for people to visit South Africa will boost his economic recovery programme.

In addition to making it less onerous  for tourists to bring their children to South Africa, Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba tells a media briefing in Pretoria that frequent foreign visitors will soon be able to get 10 year visas within five days of application.

His department’s also working on making it easier for Chinese and Indian visitors.

A pilot  eVisa  system making it possible to apply on-line for a visa will be introduced within seven months at O.R.Tambo, King Shaka and Cape Town airports.TT
