The vice president charged with  species conservation at the Nairobi-based African Wildlife Foundation spoke to Eyewitness News at the conference of the parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

David Murithi says wildlife conservation forms part of the African Union’s agenda 2063 adopted by member states.

They should not be divided on how to go about this.

The CITES gathering that underlined  a continued ban in the sale of ivory and rhino horn saw Southern Africa split with other regions on the continent.

Murithi says this is not a zero sum game.

“There are no winners or losers in this. It is about how many species can be protected,” he says.

He adds no country can live by itself. Animals have no regard for political borders so no country can protect its wildlife alone.
