A three day forum in Geneva is trying to get countries to share responsibility for the more than 70 million refugees around the world.

The gathering comes weeks after refugees besieged the United Nations High Commission For Refugees offices in Cape Town and Pretoria demanding to be moved away from xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

The Global Refugee Forum in Geneva brings together governments, business and relief agencies.

UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi says the burden of housing refugees must be shared more fairly.

The number of refugees  driven out by war in Africa and the Middle East, violent drug lords in Colombia and repressive regimes in Asia are now four times more than the people displaced by the Second World War.

The long rehabilitation process has begun for 33 lions rescued from South American circuses and flown to the Emoya Big Cat Sanctuary 300 kms north of Johannesburg ten days ago.

Mutilation and malnutrition of the animals makes them unfit for return to the wild. But they’re safe and well-fed in their permanent new  bushveld home.

The 23 lions from Lima had begun a rehabilitation process before the Animal Defenders International brought them to South Africa.

They lie about in their secure  enclosures, apparently at ease about being watched by humans whom they have no reason to like.

In the distance, the nine lions from Colombia, who were locked up right until they left the country, are given more privacy.

Emoya Big Sanctuary director Savannah Heuser explains that rehabilitation will taken months, perhaps years.

The lions are being well fed and given expert veterinary treatment sponsored by ADI

The sanctuary in Limpopo that made headlines accommodating 33 lions from circuses in Peru and Colombia is about to get three more of the big cats from a German safari park.

Unlike the South American lions the new arrivals will eventually be returned to the wild.

ends intro

The Netherlands-based Stichting Leeuw is paying to move the three lions from Germany to the Emoya Big Cat Sanctuary 300 kms north of Johannesburg later this month.

Sanctuary director Savannah Heuser says these lions will be very different from the 33 troubled and traumatised cats they received from South American circuses ten days ago.

(take in “can kill” clip here)

She says after several months of rehabilitation, the lions will eventually be able to return to live and breed in the wild.

Tunisia’s president says a third attacker involved in last week’s slaying of 25 people in the heart of the capital is still on the run.

Speaking in a live television broadcast, the Tunisian leader vows the terrorist will not get far.

At least nine suspects have been arrested followingthe attack and two gunmen thought to have assaulted the Bardo museum were killed by security forces.

President Beji Caid Essebsi says it was clear there had been three attackers, because they’ve been identified and filmed on surveillance cameras.

The gunmen are said to have been trained in Libya in an area controlled by Islamic State (IS) militants.

IS says it’s behind the attack on the museum, which is next to the country’s parliament.

Twenty foreigners were among those killed in the attack, including British, Japanese, French, Italian and Colombian tourists.

President Essebsi says a monument will be erected to the victims.

Tunisian security authorities have arrested four people in connection with yesterday’s slaying of 23 people, mostly foreign tourists, in the capital.

Two of the terrorists were killed by police clearing the Bardo Museum.

It appears those arrested either fled the scene or played a supporting role.

The names of the four people arrested haven’t been released.

And no organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Authorities have increased the death toll to 23.

Twenty are tourists. This morning officials were saying a South African was included in this number made up of visitors from Japan, Colombia, Poland, Britain, Spain

They have not confirmed this.

The dead do include terrorists Yassine Laabidi and Hatem Khachnaoui who were killed as security forces stormed the museum.
