Opposition sources said 22 died at the weekend in the northwest of the country where English-speaking separatists have been fighting authorities since 2016.

A further 18 were killed on Thursday.

The US ambassador to Cameroon Henry Barlerin says both sides have committed abuses in the increasing bitter battle of the colonial languages.

Anglophones, who make up a fifth of the 25-million population ,believe they are being marginalised and are pushing increasingly for a separate state.

Cameroon security forces have been accused of carrying out  targeted killings of their English-speaking  compatriots.

Last week seven separatist leaders, held since last January, were jailed for between 10 and 15 years.
