]]> The African National Congress says admitting Morocco to the African Union tacitly endorses the Kingdom’s longstanding occupation of the Western Sahara in defiance of the international community.

South Africa’s ruling party says the Western Sahara’s quest for self determination should occupy centre stage on the AU agenda.

The ANC says the vote by 39 of the 54 African countries to admit  Morocco to the African Union is a significant setback to the cause of the Sahrawi people and their quest for self-determination and independence in the Western Sahara.

It calls the Western Sahara  one of Africa’s last remaining colonial outposts.

The ANC further notes that it was mainly countries led by former liberation movements on the continent, amongst them South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique as well as Botswana and Algeria – who opposed the decision.
