Ramaphosa to speak at Western Sahara summit

President Cyril Ramaphosa welcomes international counterparts to a summit in Pretoria designed to show solidarity with the Western Sahara struggle for self determination and an end to Moroccan occupation.

The gathering, hosted by the regional grouping SADC, has drawn participation from 28 countries.

At the ministerial meeting, the point was repeated made that international solidarity had been effective in ending colonialism and apartheid.

Morocco, which is responsible for the last act of colonialism in Africa, has tried to deflect attention from this summit by holding a meeting on Western Sahara in Marrakesh.

ANC chairman Gwede Mantashe says Morocco’s tactic of using the proceeds from stolen Western Sahara resources to buy influence is not surprising.

“I would have expected that from Morocco., because they are exploiting Western Sahara resources. They are using them to by support and they are succeeding,” he said

The Marrakesh meeting broke up yesterday.

Venezuela plans to leave its mark on the Non Aligned Movement

Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoana Mashabane is heading South Africa’s delegation to the Non Aligned Movement summit on Venezuela’s Margarita Island this weekend.

The 120-nation body is the second largest grouping next to the United Nations and strives to bring a power balance to the world.

Like newly democratic South Africa back in 1998, countries hosting the Non Aligned Movement summit strive to leave their mark on the body.

This year’s host Venezuela says it will concentrate on fighting against colonialism, imperialism, racism and oppression.

Foreign ministers preparing for the leaders’ deliberations at the weekend are creating agreements for the promotion and defense of world peace which is one of the fundamental principles of the movement.

Zuma expresses condolences for Abdelaziz’s passing

President Jacob Zuma’s joined peers expressing condolences to the people of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic on the death of President Mohamed Abdelaziz.

He says Abdelaziz committed his life to the struggle for the independence of the Saharawi people from colonialism.

President Jacob Zuma’s tribute to his Saharawi counterpart refers to Mohamed Abdelaziz’s fight against Spanish colonialism followed the invasion of his country by Morocco that has occupied it for more than 40 years.

Zuma says South Africa remains committed to continue supporting the inalienable right to self-determination of the people of Western Sahara through the UN-led negotiations and with the support of the African Union.

US marches with Africa, says Obama

President Barak Obama was given a standing ovation at the African Union in Addis Ababa today where he announced a raft of new projects the United States would embark on in the continent of his father’s birth.
As the first US leader to address the continental body he ended his two-nation safari with the same spirit of candour and optimism that he started it with in Kenya last week.

It’s not a straight line, he says in the giant Chinese-built hall at the African Union headquarters, and sometimes it falters.
But America is with them.

Obama says Africa must attain justice, respect and human rights in the same way as colonialism was beaten with more than rifles, Americans won their civil rights and South African both black and white triumphed over apartheid.

We must work harder, Zuma tells Mugabe

Presidents Jacob Zuma and Robert Mugabe hand the baton today to the business leadesr of their two countries.

Having upgraded their diplomatic relations and signed trade deals, they’ll preside over a business forum in Pretoria putting meat on the bones.

Toasting his guest at a state banquet last night, President Jacob Zuma notes that while Zimbabwe and South Africa achieved their freedoms in 1980 and 1994 respectively, there is still a lot of work that must be done to improve the socio-economic situation of their peoples.

Zuma says the countries must work together better than ever, to confront the socio-economic challenges facing them and improve the lives of their people.

The struggle to do this is proving to be more difficult than ever thought.

But, he says, if the neighbours partner together as they did when they were fighting against colonialism and apartheid, we shall overcome.
