]]> The Congolese capital Kinshasa’s been crippled by a strike called by the opposition to force the Democratic Republic of Congo’s President Joseph Kabila to step down at the end of his term late this year.

The government’s dismissed the action as radicals having some old fashioned fun.

Shops in Kinshasa were closed and streets were mostly emptied by yesterday’s strike.

Police fired teargas to disperse opposition supporters who gathered in the capital.

Previous protests over the past two years demanding that  President Joseph Kabila  call elections in November, at the end of his constitutional mandate,  have turned deadly.

The opposition fears Kabila is trying to cling to power by delaying elections,  calling for a national census before a poll can be held.
