A passionate defence of international attempts to combat climate change has been made by outgoing US Secretary off State John Kerry.

He was speaking at the COP22 summit where delegates fear US president-elect Donald Trump will undo years of laborious negotiations to get international commitments to fight global warming.

At the COP 22 summit in Marrakesh, US Secretary of State John Kerry unusually blunt in defending the climate change agreement he spent years negotiating

“No one has the right to take decisions that will affect the lives of millions without properly understanding the implications,” he says

Kerry says anyone who has the conversations heard at COP22 and similar climate change gatherings, and

takes time learns from experts;

anyone who gets the full picture of what the world is  facing can only come to one decision which is to

act boldly on climate change and encourage others to do the same,

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI says Africa needs to speak in a single voice to demand climate change justice.

He was hosting a summit of African leaders at the COP22 climate change summit in Marrakesh that was also attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and French President Francois Hollande.

Disruptions caused by climate change are hampering African development and greatly affecting the rights of millions on the continent, says King Mohammed VI of Morocco.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon tells the 20 African leaders present that 36 of the 50 countries most affected by global warming are African.

Senegal’s President Macky Sall says African countries have to wait until 2020 for promised aid from developed countries to fight global warming.

French President Francois Holland says COP22 will lay the foundations for this help laid out in the Paris Climate Change agreement at COP21 last year.

US Secretary of State John Kerry has sent a clear message to climate change activist – and to president elect Donald Trump about his compatriots commitment to fight global warming.

He was speaking at the COP 22 climate change summit designed to put meat on the bones of the Paris Agreement committing countries to do this.

ends intro

There’s global concern that president-elect Donald Trump, who maintains global warming is a Chinese hoax, will make good on his threat to withdraw the US from the Paris Accord.

US Secretary of State John Kerry tells the COP 22 summit reaching its climax in Marrakesh that no one can deny the remarkable progress made in fighting climate change.

Kerry says this progress was hard to imagine a few years ago.

The global community, including  the United States, is more united than ever in this quest.

(take in the commit clip here)

Kerry says they’re ready to take concrete action to back up the legal agreement reached.

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI is calling on the developed countries to meet their commitments and help developing countries, landlocked and small island countries cope with the effects of climate change.

Speaking at the COP22 climate change conference, which has entered its high-level stage in Marrakesh, the king urges all parties to work on translating their commitment to the values of justice and solidarity into concrete action.

ends intro

The king says he’s speaking in the name of our shared destiny and historic responsibility.

He says advanced countries should honor their commitments and mobilize a minimum of $100 billion dollars by 2020, which was a key component of the Paris  Climate Change Agreement.

Initiatives for implementing that agreement include the initiative for the Adaptation of African Agriculture.

The outcome of the Marrakesh conference will be a true test of the efficiency of the climate change commitments made.

Delegates at the COP22 climate change conference in Morocco are hearing 2016’s global temperatures are about 1.2° Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

ends intro

The  World Meteorological Organization says temperatures spiked in the early months of the year because of the powerful El Niño event of 2015-16.

Preliminary data for October indicates that they are at a sufficiently high level for 2016 to remain on track for the title of hottest year on record. This would mean that 16 of the 17 hottest years on record have been this century (1998 was the other one).

Long-term climate change indicators are also record breaking. Concentrations of major greenhouse gases in the atmosphere continue to increase to new records.

Host country Morocco is presenting itself as a model of fighting climate change as world leaders and environmental activists  gathered in Marrakech kick off the  United Nations COP22.

The conference will grapple with how to implement the Paris climate change agreement that came into force last week.

ends intro

Morocco’s been powering ahead on climate change in a region beset with a military coup, chaotic regime change and civil war.

The kingdom’s ranked the world’s sixth best country in the 2016 Climate Change Performance Index.

It’s the only non-European country in the top-20.

Earlier this year, Morocco opened Noor 1, a solar power plant in the Sahara so enormous it can be seen from space.

It’s all part of a push to generate 52% of its energy from renewables by 2030.

Two years ago the turbines started spinning at Tarfaya, the largest wind farm in Africa.
