Barely had a killer cyclone passed over the Horn of Africa and two breakaway states in the troubled region are back at each other’s throats.

There’s no clarity about casualties in the resumption of fighting between Somaliland and Puntland.

Fighting between these two Horn-of- Africa states was halted by cyclone Sagar that killed dozens  and displaced thousands in Somaliland, Puntland and Djibouti this week.

Yesterday Somaliland and Puntland troops resumed their exchange of artillery and heavy weapons around the town of Tukarak, 80 kms away from the Puntland capital Garowe.

Tukarak, in the disputed Sool region, fell to Somaliland forces last January.

Both sides accuse the other of  taking up weapons after the deadliest  storm  in decades.

The United Nations has appealed for $80-million to help pay for the damage caused by a tropical cyclone in the Horn of Africa.

At least 18 people have been killed by the storm and 40 fishermen in the Gulf of Aden remain unaccounted for.

Even as residents of Somaliland and Puntland count the cost of tropical cyclone Sagar they are watching a new storm  building in the Gulf of Aden that’s likely to hit them this week.

Schools and community centers have been flooded.

Roads remain impassable.

Key infrastructure, including the central electrical compound in Djibouti City, remains under water.

Damage from the storm, which has affected at least 30 000 people, includes  the risk of environmental pollution.
