Security forces are hunkering down in the town of Dammartin on the northeastern outskirts of Paris, hoping to get a peaceful end to the siege of two jihadis who gunned down a dozen people in the capital on Wednesday.

A man who was at the print shop where Cherif and Said Kouachi are holed up has spoken about his narrow escape this morning.

The man identified only as Didier told French radio he did not know who was speaking to when he met and shook hands with the Kouachi brothers in Dammartin this morning.

He says they were dressed in black and armed with assault rifles like the special forces.

Only when they told him to leave because they do no kill civilians and to tell the world that they belong to Al Qaeda, did he realise who was dealing with.

Didier says he’ll play the lottery tonight at the end of what it clearly his luckiest day.

The 48-hour hunt for the men who gunned down a dozen people at the offices of a satirical magazine in Paris has ended on the outskirts of the capital.

The noose is closing around Cherif and Said Kouachi who are holed up in the offices of a construction company. They’re reportedly holding a hostage.

The French-born jihadi brothers broke cover this morning, stealing car in the village Crespy.

Overnight they’d evaded the biggest manhunt in French history.

There was an exchange of fire in which people were injured.

A police convoy chased the bothers along the N2 highway determined not to let them re-enter Paris.

Under a global spotlight with the world’s media looking on, the brothers have gone to ground in the town of Dammartin.

French police have made contact with the Kouachi brothers who say they want to die as martyrs.

The jihadists are under siege in a small printing shop northeast of Paris and are holding a hostage.

The noose is closing around Cherif and Said Kouachi who evaded France’s biggest manhunt in history for 48 hours after murdering a dozen people in the Paris office of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Ending the siege at Dammartin will be a delicate business.

There are schools nearby and Charles de Gaul international airport that’s closed two runways to arriving aircraft.

Police prevented the brothers, who broke cover this morning stealing a car and engaging in a firefight and car chase, from getting back into Paris.

Now they’ve got to end the security nightmare without further loss of innocent life.
