Mauritian Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth is resigning today and handing power to his son.

Opposition parties say he risks turning the successful Indian Ocean nation into a banana republic.

Anerood Jugnauth first became prime minister of Mauritius in 1982.

His latest spell at the helm began three years ago.

The 86-year-old says its time for new blood.

He’s handing the baton to his son Pravind who’s finance minister and leader of the island’s largest party, the Militant Socialist Movement.

He counters critics of the move saying Mauritius has a Westminister-style government where transferring power without holding an election is perfectly acceptable.

He cites the recent example of David Cameron stepping down  as British Prime minister for Theresa May.

At the London  summit on fighting corruption,  Britain and the United States have  looked at their own policies and their role as shelters for billions of dollars stolen by corrupt politicians in developing countries.

The London gathering shifted the focus on global corruption, turning the spotlight of blame away from African generals, oligarchs and corrupt dictators and toward the rich countries, whose banks and real estate brokers have been the benefactors of the stolen wealth of nations.

British Prime Minister David Cameron announced measures including a public register intended to force companies to name their real owners.

Cameron says corruption is the cancer at the heart of so many problems the world needs to tackle.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says corruption is as much of an enemy as the extremists being fought around the world.

Premier David Cameron ridicule by not inviting Fifa, Panama or British Virgin Island to the gathering.

Until he raised the diplomatic storm with Nigeria with his unguarded comments to Queen Elizabeth, Prime Minister David Cameron was being called brave for calling an anti-corruption summit so soon after the Panama Papers revealed where the super rich were hiding their money.

Cameron will announced that foreign firms  owning  property in Britain  will have to declare their assets publicly in a bid to stamp out money-laundering.

One in 10 properties in the salubrious London West end are owned by foreigners.

One in three international tax havens is British, putting the UK under pressure to do more to stop dodging costing  governments – many of them in developing countries – $170 billion a year.

Britain is hosting an anti-corruption summit in London tomorrow.

Nigeria is invited.

As is Afghanistan

Both were lumped together by British Prime Minister David Cameron as the most corrupt countries on the planet.

Cameron was speaking to Queen Elizabeth about the Cabinet meeting earlier yesterday that discussed plans for the summit.

He is said to be embarrassed about being caught on camera.

A Nigerian government spokesman says Cameron’s remarks show Britain has not taken account of the anti corruption measures taken by President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Barak Obama says US and European air strikes prevented Mummer Gadaffi from massacring his own subjects.

But they had not brought democracy to Libya.

Obama criticises what he calls free riding European partners pushing the US to act against Gadaffi but refusing themselves to put skin in the game.

The Whitehouse subsequently issued a statement saying the US deeply values Britain’s contribution to shared national security and foreign policy objectives, underlining the special and essential bilateral relationship

European leaders are gathered at an emergency summit in Brussels dealing with human trafficking.
They’re under pressure to respond more effectively to the 2 000 deaths this year of people trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa in a desperate bid to reach Europe.
ends intro
With more than 700 deaths of migrants this past week, European leaders are expected to double the amount of money they spend rescuing people who’ve come to grief in overcrowded and unseaworthy boats.
Politically it is easier for them to sell their domestic audiences a message of getting tough with the people traffickers who are profiting from the desperate migrants.
This applies particularly to British premier David Cameron, two weeks away from an election and under attack from the anti-immigrant UK Independence Party.

A million people are expected to gather in central Paris today showing their rejection of the extremism that led two French jihadis to kill 12 people at a magazine that had lampooned Islam….

….and another to kill four people at a Jewish grocery store.

In South Africa, French Ambassador Elizabeth Barbier will lead a rally at Zoo Lake in Johannesburg. Others will be held in Cape Town and Durban.

World leaders will join the gathering in Paris, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British premier David Cameron and Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy have said they’ll be there.

They’ll be protected by six thousand police.

France remains on a highest state of alert even though the hostage-takers died in deadly gunbattles with police.

The search for their accomplices continues.

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls says France must remain outraged forever at the worst terrorist attack in more than 50 years.
