Tomorrow’s re-run presidential election is set to go ahead in Kenya after today’s no-show by five of the seven Supreme Court judges due to hear a petition to have it postponed.

Fears of violence are mounting after the governor of an opposition-dominated region endorsed rebellion against voting.

ends intro

Chief Justice David Maraga says the Supreme Court failed to achieve a quorum because one judge was sick, another felt unsafe after her bodyguard was shot yesterday and another was abroad.

He did not account for the two other absent judges who opposed the court’s 4-2 ruling in favour of annulling the August poll won by Uhuru Kenyatta.

Opposition leader Rail Odinga, who’s boycotting the election, says its no accident the court has failed to sit.

He says it was designed by Kenyatta, who beat him in 2013.

He was speaking as protests grew outside the court alleging misconduct and bias and demanding the judges’ removal.

Petitions have been filed asking the Judicial Service Commission to remove Chief Justice David Maraga and three other senior judges.

They’re due to give details today of their ruling to annul President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election and call for a new poll on  October 17.

A non-governmental organization’s  filed two petitions claiming judges had improper contact with lawyers for opposition leader Raila Odinga during his court challenge of Kenyatta’s win.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta vows to fix the judiciary that annulled last year’s election that he won.

He was speaking after the Supreme Court accepted opposition leader Raila Odinga’s petition calling the poll fraudulent and ordered that it be re-run within 60 days.

President Uhuru Kenyatta responded to the shock judgment saying he disagreed with it denying  his election victory but calling for calm.

Chief Justice David Maraga says the vote was unconstitutional

A day later Kenyatta’s  saying Kenya clearly has a problem with the four judges who made the ruling.

He vows to return to the issue if elected.

Kenyatta believe the unelected judges cannot annul the wishes of the people.

Analysts see this as a worrying development.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta says he disagrees with the Supreme Court annulling last month’s elections.

He says, however, he’ll respect the judgment and he calls on Kenyans to remains calm.

The Supreme Court in Nairobi finds there were irregularities in the conduct of the election.

Four of the six judges upheld a petition brought by opposition leader Raila Odinga that the conduct of the elections was fraudulent.

Chief Justice David Maraga says the poll was not run in according with the Kenyan  constitution.

It rules that elections should be re-run within two  months.

The opposition welcomes the decision to examine the work of international observers who validated the result of the vote.

The decision has baffled many observers.
