There appears to be good news in the fight against the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

The United Nations Ebola coordinator David Nabarro say the crisis caused by the deadly haemorrhagic disease has reached tipping point.

UN Ebola Czar David Nabarro says there’s now a reasonable change the current outbreak of Ebola, which is the worst the world had seen, could end quickly.

Fresh data from the World Health Organisation shows that all three of the hardest hit countries – Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone – have experienced the lowest weekly tally of new cases in months.

Nabarro says this puts them on the downward slope of the outbreak.

He cautions that more efforts are needed to end the outbreak.

The downward trend will continue if practices are put in place to combat transmission.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is visiting the African countries worst hit by the Ebola outbreak.

He’s showing his support for the fight against the disease that’s killed nearly 7 000 people and he’ll press for continued international response until the epidemic ends.

First stop for UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon is Accra where the emergency UN mission on Ebola is based.

World Health Organization chief Margaret Chan, the Secretary General’s special envoy on Ebola David Nabarro and the head of the UN mission on Ebola Tony Banbury are joining him as he heads for Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

Ban’s avoided visiting these West African nations for fear of disrupting response efforts.

But now he wants to see for himself the progress being reported by the world organisation in controlling the disease and allocating resources to the afflicted nations.

The death toll from the Ebola virus now exceeds 5000 according to the World Health Organisation.

The United Nations Ebola coordinator David Nabarro says slow progress is being made in tackling the virus in West Africa while calling for people not to stygmatise those from countries affected.

British foreign minister Philip Hammons visited an Ebola treatment centre in Sierra Leone, where the UK has concentrated its effort fighting the deadly fever.

He says they’ll have established 700 treatment beds in country by the end of the year.

US health officials tell congress they’ve trained 250 000 American doctors, nurses and and other health workers to safely handle any Ebola patients who arrive in their country.

It’s part of the $6,2 billion emergency aid request by President Barak Obama to fight the disease in West Africa and guard against it at home.

United Nations special envoy on Ebola David Nabarro says he hopes that the outbreak can be brought under control within three months.

He fears the number of Ebola cases is currently increasing exponentially, but hopes greater community awareness will help contain the virus.

David Nabarro says people are becoming aware that isolating those infected is the best way to prevent transmission of Ebola that killed more than 4 000 in the current West African outbreak.

The UN special envoy says the number of new cases is quite frightening, as the spread of the disease is currently accelerating.

He believes there’s now much better community involvement leading him to project that getting it under control within the next three months is a reasonable target.
