]]> Sworn in for his second term, Botswana’s President Ian Khama’s promised to intensify efforts to diversify the economy and eradicate poverty.
His Botswana Democratic Party’s seen its majority eroded by growing economic strain and unemployment.
President Ian Khama’s inauguration ceremony included 21 gun salute and a flypast by military aircraft.
He says the key to achieving sustainable
diversified economic growth and social security lies in the development of people through improved education and skills.
Khama promises his government will focus on emerging opportunities within the mineral sector and developing other sectors like agriculture and
tourism.
Botswana produces a third of the world’s diamonds by value.

Two years ago De Beers moved its diamond sorting
business to the capital Gaborone.
The country’s seen rising unemployment since 2009 when the global economic crisis sent diamond
prices falling.
