The date announced by the electoral commission in Kinshasa is fully two  years  after Presdident Joseph Kabila’s constitutional mandate runs out.

Washington’s chief envoy to the United Nations Nikki Haley says the date of December 23, 2018 for presidential  elections  in the DRC means the poll will be long overdue.

However it provides a clear timeline for the transfer of power.

She says the US will work closely with the DRC, the United Nations and other partners to ensure this timeline is stuck to and that there is peaceful participation in the elections with freedom of speech in the campaign.
