The remains of a Black South African soldier who
died nearly a century ago during World War I have been reburied alongside those of 600 of his white compatriots in northern France.

Vice President Cyril Ramaphosa was among those at the ceremony.
Private Myengwa Beleza was buried in a civilian cemetery in Le Havre because the Pretoria authorities would not permit his remains to laid next those of white soldiers at the Delville Wood war memorial.

Beleza was one of 25 000 Black South African volunteers who fought in France during the war from 1914 to 1918.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa says the reburial is part of a process to restore the dignity of Black South African who made an enormous contribution to world peace.
