]]> The joint Nobel Peace Prize winners agreed when presented with their awards today that not enough is being down to stop rape being used as a weapon of war.

They’ve dedicated their prizes of R16-million each to address this evil.

Gynecologist Denis Mukwege has treated tens of thousands of rape victims in his native Democratic Republic of Congo.

He says his prize means governments will no longer be able to say they have not done anything because they did not know it was happening.

Yazidi youth activist Nadia Murad who survived forced marriage, gang rape and beatings says not a single ISIS fighter has appeared in court for similar crimes against thousands of her Khurdish speaking compatriots.

She’s hopeful her prize will enable activist like her to approach more governments in their search for justice.

]]> A machete attack in the restive North Kivus area of the Democratic Republic of Congo has left 14 villagers dead and another nine wounded.

Locals in the area fight over the mining of coltan, a vital mineral in making cellphones.

A battalion of soldiers has been despatched to the village of Rubaya, north of the Kivus capital Goma after the weekend attack.

The rebel Mai Mai group, that finances its operations with the proceeds of coltan sales, operates lethally in the area.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Denis Mukwege, who was recognized for his work on rape victims in the Congo, also has a campaign urging electronics companies to ensure that they are not using blood minerals in the manufacture of their products.

]]> A Congolese doctor shares this year ’s Nobel Peace Prize with a former Iraqi sex slave.

Dr Denis Mukwege was operating on patient today when he was told about the honour bestowed on him.

Dr Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work against the use of rape as a weapon of war.

Mukwege is recognized as an expert in treating the serious injuries associated with sexual assault, having dealt with  more than 30 000 rape victims in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mukwege recalls that his  professional horror began 20 years ago when a rape victim was brought to him with bullet wounds in her vagina and thighs.

He counted  it as a particularly brutal attack until three months later when 45 patients were brought in with similar injuries.
