Visiting Portuguese Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Teresa Ribeiro says bilateral relations are good but should be improved.

Teresa Riberio says Portugal will use its presidency of the EU next year to prioritize Europe’s relations with Africa.

South Africa has a role in this.

“We need South Africa to help us in building the relationship between Africa and Europe through the African Union where South Africa is an important actor,” she says

Ribeiro says Portugal is seeking to break the historic donor/recipient relationship between Europe and Africa and to build more symmetric ties between equals.

Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation  Alvin Botes, who is  heading the South African team at the talks, says the countries share traditional cultural and historical ties.
