Ruling unconstitutional the amnesty deal brokered by South Africa judge Dikgang Moseneke threatens Lesotho’s fragile coalition government led by Thomas Thabane

Opposition leader Mothetjoa Metsing fled the kingdom facing charges of corruption and possible treason for his involvement in a failed 2014 coup attempt that forced the region to get involved in restoring stability.

Metsing’s also suspected of being behind the killing of former army chief Maaparakoe Mahao.

Lesotho’s Prime Minister Monyane Moleleleki is criticized for signing the deal brokered by the South African  mediator

Lesotho’s opposition parties have reportedly pulled out from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) recommended reform process.

They’re demanding  demanding that the government sets aside the suspension of the country’s chief justice.

Prime Minister Tom Thabane suspended Lesotho’s

Chief justice Nthomeng Majara  accusing her  of inciting violence and threatening peace and stability in the mountain kingdom.

Majara’s suspension attracted international condemnation from judges, and rights groups.

The SADC reforms were intended to lead to the amendment of the constitution and eventual stability, following years of political and security upheaval.

The opposition withdrawal is disappointment for the SADC mediation facilitation team which was led by former deputy chief justice, Judge Dikgang Moseneke.

The regional grouping stepped in after a failed coup attempt in 2014.
