The region and the continent have given their seals of approval to Namibia’s elections held last Friday.
They commended the peaceful nature of the operation  but both call on the Windhoek authorities to simplify the process that led to long delays.

Heading the SADC observer mission in Namibia, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoana Mashebane says despite the delays there was high voter turnout and Namibians should respect the outcome that gives SWAPO another mandate and puts Hage Geingob at the helm as president.
African Union mission head Fatuma Ndangiza gives the process the thumbs up but says it should be simplified. Operators of the electronic voting and security scanning systems – a first for Africa – must be better trained, she says.

African leaders have gathered in Equatorial Guinea for the 23 summit of the continental body.

Former president Thabo Mbeki’s report on the illicit financial outflow from Africa will feature prominently on the agenda which will be dominated by terrorism and conflict in the 54 member states.

Yet again President Teodoro Obiang Nguema’s getting an opportunity to showcase his capital boosted by Equatorial Guinea’s oil wealth.

As he did in 2011, he’s flying presidents directly into Malabo, so they’re not seeing the poor parts of his country that have not shared the wealth.

AU Commission head Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma wants to concentrate on the development agenda – particularly agriculture and food security.

But the leaders cannot avoid discussing the upsurge of terrorism in Kenya and Nigeria and the continuing conflict in the Central African Republic and South Sudan.
