]]> Christine Lagarde and temporarily stood down as managing director of the International Monetary Fund after being nominated to head the European Central Bank.

The 63-year-old lawyer-turned financier will be the first woman in that job.

Christine Lagarde has developed an image as the rock star of international finance.

Appointed finance minister by then French President Nicholas Sarkozy, she was the first woman to hold the purse strings in the group of seven richest countries on the planet.

She stepped in to the IMF top job when its boss Dominique Strauss Kahn resigned over unproved rape and sexual misconduct charges.

Lagarde managed the successful transition out of the global finncial crisis, which is predominantly why European leaders want her to mange the euro and the Eurozone.
