The opposition Democratic Alliance has filed an application in South Africa’s highest court to intervene in the bid by far-left Economic Freedom Fighters to have President Jacob Zuma impeached.

Other opposition parties, the United Democratic Movement and the Congress of the People have already supported the EFF legal bid to force Parliamentary Baleka Mbete to introduce impeachment proceedings against the president.

In March, the Economic Freedom Fighters initiated impeachment proceedings after the Constitutional Court found President Jacob Zuma did not uphold the Constitution.

The court finding relates to Zuma’s failure  to implement the Public Protector’s remedial action that he repay some of the public money spent on security upgrades at his private Nkandla home.

The DA says after reviewing the arguments made by the other applicants in the EFF case, it can provide new information.

It’s now applied to the Constitutional Court to make written submissions and oral argument before the matter is heard on 5 September.

Chairperson of the DA’s federal executive, James Selfe, says the matter presents an opportunity for the court to provide clear guidelines on impeachment proceedings.

The case is only one attempt to remove Zuma from office.

The National Assembly is expected to vote on a motion of no confidence in him on 8 August.

The Constitutional Court has found that Mbete is empowered to have this matter decided on a secret vote by MPs

South Africans go to the polls today for the closest fought election since the onset of democracy 22 years ago.

The South African Police Service and the Independent Electoral Commission are assuring South Africans they’ll be able to vote efficiently, secretly and peacefully.

This has been a deadly campaign in the ANC stronghold of KwaZulu Natal where at least 13 people, including election candidates, have been killed.

The election has seen the three main parties – the ANC, the Democratic Alliance which is the official opposition and the ultra-left Economic Freedom Fighters battle for the soul of previous leaders.

To the chagrin of the ANC, the DA claims that anti-apartheid icon and first democratic president Nelson Mandela would have voted for the them were he still alive.

EFF leader Julius Malema called on former president Thabo Mbeki to beg for the vote from the man whom he was party to humiliating with an early recall from the top job in 2008.

The issues in this election are the ANC’s failure to meet commitments to provide essential services and  burgeoning corruption, nepotism and cronyism within  President Jacob Zuma’s government.

Medical personnel were called into the National Assembly after a brutal fist fight between members of the ultra left Economic Freedom fighters and parliamentary protection officers ordered to remove them.

The EFF members in their red boiler suits refused to allow President Jacob Zuma answer Parliamentary questions. They insisted he was the one who should be removed for violating South Africa’s constitution.

This is the second time in a fortnight that scuffles have erupted in the National Assembly after speaker Baleka Mbete ordered the protection officers to remove EFF MPs who refused to allow President Jacob Zuma to speak.

The MPs threw bottles and hard hats – part of their worker uniforms – at the security officers.

Outside the chamber they set off a fire hydrant and broke a glass door with a steel rod.

Medical personnel were called to assist an MP – understood to be from the ANC – who collapsed.

MPs from the governing party are calling for the EFF members to be charges with criminal damage to parliamentary property.

EFF leader Julius Malema says  his party has exhausted all peaceful means to ask Zuma to resign. In future they will answer violence with violence.

Earlier this week the EFF failed in a court bid to interdict Mbete not to use protection officers to remove MPs when they  prevented Zuma  from speaking in Parliament.

South Africa’s ruling  African National Congress has asked the police to investigate whether to charge ultra-left Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema with treason after he threatened to oust President Jacob Zuma’s government through the barrel of a gun.

The ANC Youth League, which Malema led before being expelled from the party three years ago, has asked the national defense force to set soldier on the EFF after Malema’s threat.

ANC spokesman Zizi Kodwa says they’ve made a formal accusation against Julius  Malema at a police station in Johannesburg.

Kodwa alleges Malema’s  utterances and conduct are treasonable.

HE says the ANC’s protecting  and defending  South Africa hard-earned democracy.

For  anyone to say they are prepared to remove a democratically elected government through undemocratic means such as through the barrel of a gun is a serious threat.

Both the  EFF and the largest opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, are trying to wrest control of key cities such as Pretoria, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth from the ANC in municipal elections scheduled for August 3.

Malema says he’s happy to answer Kodwa’s challenge in court.

He says the EFF’s  running out of patience and is considering using force against the government because of its alleged use of violence against protesters.

He says the ANC’s rigged election in the most populous province of Gauteng before and the EFF won’t allow them to get away with it again.

The leftist Economic Freedom Fighters have started the countdown to next week’s opening of parliament in Cape Town when they say they’ll hold President Jacob Zuma accountable to the country for the upgrades to his home at Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal.
They’re also threatening to use shock tactics if they’re barred from wearing their trademark red overalls or maids uniforms in the house.
The clock on the EFF website has nine days and some minutes and seconds until what they’re calling the day of accountability.
President Jacob Zuma’s due to answer questions in the national assembly next month.
Last time he did this he was shouted down by EFF members who faced disciplinary action for disruptive behaviour
Next week’s opening’s traditionally dedicated to Zuma’s state-of-the-nation speech.
The EFF threaten to cause turmoil again if Zuma doesn’t offer to pay back the money paid from the public purse for security upgrades to his private home.
The event traditionally has television cameras filming legislators posing in their finery.
The EFF say they’re determined to save it from becoming a fashion parade.
Their leader Julius Malema says he’ll appear in the nude if women colleagues are prevented from wearing the maids uniforms and men are not allowed to sport the red overalls and hard hats they wear to underline their working-class status.
