The medical charity Medicines Sans Frontiers has abandoned an EBOLA treatment facility in the Democratic Republic of Congo after it was attacked and partly burned down at the weekend.

The closure comes as the second largest outbreak in recorded history of the haemorrhagic spreads through the east of the Central African giant.

Medicines Sans Frontier’s local representative Emmanuel Massart says Sunday’s attack on the Katwa centre in North Kivu has crippled the charity’s ability to respond to what is now the epicenter of the EBOLA outbreak.

Katwa has treated 239 of the 872 EBOLA cases recorded since December and seen 182 of the 483 EBOLA deaths.

The ten patients at Katwa – four of them confirmed EBOLA victims – have been transferred.

The brother of one of the patients, later identified as a caretaker, died trying to escape the attackers.
