Rwanda’s most high profile opposition figure has been acquitted on charges of inciting insurrection and fraud leveled at her for opposing President Paul Kagame in last year’s election.

Diane Rwigara, a 37-year-old businesswoman expressed relief at the judges calling the charges ‘baseless’ and said she would continue campaigning against human rights violations in Rwanda.

Amnesty International welcomes the acquittal of Diane Rwigara and her mother Adeline and says they should never have been charged and imprisoned for more than a year.

President Paul Kagame faces a flood of international criticism for his spiteful pursuit of a political opponent that included auctioning her personal assets.

Rwigara remained defiant despite facing a 22-year jail sentence and maintain she will vociferously champion human rights being trampled by Kagame.

Jacob Zuma’s corruption trial delayed until July 27

The corruption trial of former President Jacob Zuma has been postponed until July 27 to give French arms firm Thales time to make a representation that charges against it should be dropped and Zuma’s legal team to ascertain whether the State will pay his legal fees

Zuma will make another appearance next month but his trial on charges of fraud, corruption, money laundering and racketeering relating to a multi billion rand arms procurement deal while he was still vice president, is unlikely to start then.

After his brief appearance this morning (Friday), the former president took the stage to speak and sing to thousands of supporters outside the Durban High Court.

He said the charges against him should be dropped because they amounted to nothing.

He warned that he had the files on those meeting secretly against him and he would not hesitate to expose their corruption.

His mood was studiously upbeat as he ended his 30-minute speech in Zulu to supporters with two revolutionary songs including his trademark “mshiniwam”.

The specially elected stage included activists from organizations promoting land expropriation without compensation and radical economic transformation who have taken Zuma as a godfather figure.

It was also an opportunity for disgraces members like Carl Niehaus and Supra Mahumapelo to reciprocate the support Zuma has shown them in their hours of shame.

Faith healer cons would-be moms in Guinea with swollen stomachs

A faith healer in Guinea’s being held by police for feeding would-be mothers with a stomach-bloating concoction and telling them they’re pregnant.

She charged them R400 which is almost a month’s salary in that West African country.

At least 700 women were conned by faith healer N’na Fanta Camara.

She fed them herbs and spices that made their stomachs bloat.

Then she warned them against seeing doctors – although some of the fake pregnancies lasted as long as 16 months.

At least 47 will suffer long-term complications from the treatment.

More than 200 angry woman demonstrated outside the police station where she is being held pending charges of fraud and endangerment.

Camara is quoted as saying she only wanted to help.
