Rescue workers are desperately trying to get to people buried by a mudslide that killed hundreds outside Freetown in Sierra Leone.

More than 300 bodies have been recovered and Vice President Victor For says many hundreds might still lie under the mud.

The Red Cross says at least 3 000 have been left homeless by the heavy rains that turned roads into rivers of churning mud.

But the initial concern is for the hundreds killed – many as they slept – in their homes.

Recovery teams have to wait for the flood to subside to begin their tragic operation.

President Ernest Bai Koroma  has called it  a national tragedy.

Sixty percent of Sierra Leoneans live under the poverty line, forcing them to build ramshackle homes in dangerous places.

A deadly mudslide has turned road in Sierra Leone into rivers of silt.

It’s feared that more than 200 people have been killed as houses have been submerged.

Desparate family members have been digging through the mud in Freetown in search of their loved ones.

The mortuary in the Sierra Leonean capital is overwhelmed.

Houses have be  submerged in mud after a night of heavy rain collapsed  a hillside above a heavily populated residential quarter.

Most of the victims were asleep when they were engulfed by what rescue workers say are roads turned into churning rivers of mud.

Sierra Leone’s Vice-President Victor Bockarie Foh says it’s  likely that hundreds are lying dead.

Foh says the disaster is so serious that he personally  feels broken.

Analysis by the National Academy of Sciences in London finds a tiny handful of people caused the majority of cases in the world’s largest outbreak of Ebola.

Nearly two thirds of the cases were infected by just 3% of people who contracted the deadly disease.

It is hoped the study of the super spreaders of the Ebola outbreak that killed more than 11 000 people in three West African countries in 2014 and 2015 will help contain the next outbreak.

Researchers at the Imperial College in London looked at cases in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone.

By examining where and when cases emerged, they were able to establish  how many people the infected patients passed the disease on to.
