President Muhamadu Buhari has blocked food imports to Nigeria.

He’s done it to boost local agriculture.

Tweeting through his spokesman, Nigerian President Muhamadu Buhari says don’t give a cent to anybody to import food into the country.

He maintains foreign reserves must be used to diversify the economy, not to encourage more dependence on foreign  food imports.

With more than 200 million people and a growing middle class, Nigerian are eating more and more beef.

They eat half the meat consumed in all of West Africa.

The current consumption of 360 000 tons a year is expected to quadruple by 2050.

The semi-nomadic Fulani herders supply all they  can raise, but Nigeria has to import beef to meet the demand.

Men dressed as traditional hunters have raided a village in central Mali killing at least 31 people.

The victims include children and old people.

The raid left the village of Koulogon in flames with the livestock driven away by the attackers who wore the attire of Dozos or traditional hunters.

They are at daggers draw with the Fulani shepherds who live in the area.

Residents also have to endure attacks from Sunni terror groups affiliated to Al Qaeda.

There are more than 15 000 United Nations stabilization and peacekeeping troops in Mali, policing a 2015 peace agreement.

It’s considered one of the most dangerous theaters for peacekeepers on the planet.

Initial government response to the attack gives no explanations for why it happened.

Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, sworn in for a second term as Mali’s President, has his work cut out.

His opponent Soumaila Cisse maintains the run-off election was rigged and rising Islamist extremism has sparked inter-communal violence in his country.

United Nations peacekeepers backed by French and other Western troops regard Mali as their deadliest theatre of conflict in the world.

They can’t stop the deteriorating security situation demonstrated by the disruption of elections where officials were chased away from at least 500 polling stations.

The jihadis have been recruiting heavily from the Fulani tribe, causing deadly fights with the Dogon tribe, who are also losing young men to the terrorists.

Small wonder Ibrahim Boubacar Keita listed security as his number one priority in his presidential inauguration speech.

Nigerian President Mummadu Buhari’s ordered a probe into clashes between herders and crop growers in the central Benue state that’s left at least 300 dead and displaced several thousand.

He’s called for unity saying tribal divisions should not prevent Nigerians from living  together.

After the latest violence, the Global Terrorism Index lists Fulani militants as the fourth most deadly group on the planet.

They have no connection with the even more lethal Boko Haram group seeking to establish a caliphate in north eastern Nigeria.

In this latest outbreak, nomadic Fulani herdsmen have overrun four communities on farmland tended by the Agate group.

Local media is describing the Fulani, who are using motorcycles and even a helicopter, as marauders.

It’s calling what’s happening a genocide.
