The students had received memos warning of possible violence and the principal of Garissa University College asked in vain for additional security at the campus.

Most of those who died in the raid were students.

It hasn’t been possible to verify Kenyan reports that its warplanes destroyed the bases in Gedo from where Al Shabab militants cross into Kenya.

A pall of smoke hangs over the dormitory and students could be seen running from the building in their pyjamas.

There are unconfirmed reports of students being taken hostage.

The area has come under frequent attack from Al Shabab avenging Kenya’s involvement in the multinational force supporting the government in Somalia.
