The Herero tribe will appeal a New York court throwing out their compensation claim for genocide suffered during Germany’s colonial occupation of Namibia.

Tens of thousands of Hereros and at least 10 000 Namas were killed by the Germans when they revealed between 1904 and 1908.

New York Judge Laura Taylor Swain ruled that the Herero and Nama claim was inadmissible because of Germany’s sovereignty immunity during its 31-year colonization of Namibia.

Herero chief Vekuii Rukero says the judge was wrong and the ruling would be appealed.

The claim was made in New York because the tribes maintain there is an American commercial involvement in the genocide because bones of the victims were  sold in the  United States.

Burundi authorities have given the UN human rights body two months to quit their capital.

A UNHRC report accuses the Burundi regime of involvement in systematic abuses and risk of genocide following President Pierre Nkurunziza’s  decision in 2015 to seek an unconstitutional third term in office.

The commission regrets the decision and says it would have preferred to continue its cooperation with Burundi.

Amnesty International says its deeply disappointed by the Burundi government action  but insists that truth will still get out of the country where thousands of the president’s opponents have been killed.

Germany has returned to Namibian authorities the skulls of Herero and Nama people killed in a genocide more than a century ago.

Today’s handover at a Berlin church is the third by the German government that refuses to pay reparations for the  killing of more than 100 000 colonial subjects.

The Herero and Nama people are growing impatient with the German government, that admits the killings of  Hereros and Namaquas in retaliation for their rebellion in 2004 was the first genocide of the 20th century, but refuses to pay reparations.

The skulls of many victims were sent to Germany for scientific research purporting to show the inferior brain capacity of Africans.

The German public broadcaster ARD says the skulls of 1 000 Rwandans and 60 Tanzanians killed during German colonial times are still in Berlin.

The International Criminal Court’s reported Jordan to the United Nations Security Council for not arresting Sudan’s President Omar al Bashir when he visited the Kingdom.

The legal institution is going a step further than it did against South Africa for failing to meet its obligations under the Rome Treaty establishing it.

Sudanese President Omar al Bashir visited Jordan last March for an Arab League summit.

The ICC reminded King Abdullah II that al Bashir is wanted on charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

Jordan made no attempt to detain the Sudanese leader…

… just as the South African authorities fell foul of the ICC and its own Supreme Court for failing to detain al Bashir when  he was in South Africa for the AU summit in 2015.

In the latter case the ICC rapped South Africa over the knuckles but did not refer the matter to the UN powerhouse.

The International Criminal Court says it will hold a public hearing next April to probe whether South Africa failed in its duty by refusing to arrest Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir when  he visited  Johannesburg last year.

As a signatory of the Rome Statute, South Africa’s obliged to hold Bashir who’s wanted by the court for war crimes and genocide in Darfur

The announcement from the Hague follows last year’s dispute when President Omar al Bashir attended an African Union summit.

The Sudanese leader was able to leave despite a South African High Court ruling that he be held pending its judgment.

The Appeal Court’s  accused government of disgraceful conduct and ruled that failure to arrest Bashir was unlawful.

Government maintains Bashir had immunity as an AU head of  state.

It has subsequently given notice that it is leaving this ICC.

But this does not exonerate it from its obligations while still a signatory.

They say there’s been a new intensification of repression and crimes against opponents of President Pierre Nkurunziza.

ends intro

The International Federation For Human Rights and the Burundian Human Rights League have issued a 200-page report listing what they call dramatic actions by the Burundian government.

These include the expulsion of African Union and United Nations human rights experts from Burundi;

The denunciation by the Burundian government of a UN human rights report critical of actions in Bujumbura;

Burundi’s withdrawal from the International Criminal Court; and

The suspension of five human rights organizations in Burundi.

The alarm bells started ringing, say the watchdogs, when President Pierre Nkurunziza decided to take an unconstitutional third term at the helm.

Two Zambians have been burned to death in xenophobic violence in the capital.

President Edgar Lungu’s ordered the military to restore order in Lusaka where at least 62 Rwandan-owned shops have been looted.

The two deaths in Zambia are put down to confusion in one of the  one of the nine Lusaka neighborhoods shaken by xenophobic violence.

It’s been sparked by the suspicion that Rwandans are behind seven recent ritual killings in the Zambian capital.

Home Affairs Minister Davies Mwila urges his compatriots not to heed these malicious rumours.

He says there have been at least 11 arrests following the ritual killings.

At least 6 000 Rwandans moved to Zambia following the 1994 genocide in their country.

They say they have no intention of returning.

Many have sought Zambian citizenship.

The allegations by President Pierre Nkurunziza and Burundi’s ruling party chief Pascal Nyabende that  President Paul Kagame wants to play the minor imperialist are particularly keenly felt in Rwanda.

US and other  Western powers have expressed concern about Kagame’s meddling in regional affairs.

He’s criticized his Burundian neighbour for taking an unconstitutional third term in power.

But Kagame himself plans to follow suit – albeit after  winning a referendum scrapping presidential term limits in Rwanda.

The Pretoria High Court will hear an urgent application for the arrest of Sudan’s president Omar al Bashir who’s arrived for the African Union summit in Sandton.
The International Criminal Court has two outstanding warrants against Bashir alleging genocide in his western province of Darfur.
end intro
The urgent application brought by humand rights watchdog groups will be heard by Judge Hans Fabricius.
Prosecutors had been prepared to arrest Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir when he arrived in South Africa as they are obliged to do as signatories of the Rome Treaty establishing the International Criminal Court.
But last Thursday government gazetted a provision under the Diplomatic Immunities and Protection Act giving safe passage to any leader or delegate attending the AU summit.
The urgent application is seeking to have this overturned.
