Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza’s urging an end to protests against his seeking a third term in office.

He says he’s beaten an attempted coup launched while he was at a regional summit called in Tanzania to deal with the crisis triggered by him clinging to power.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon warns against reprisals in Burundi after the rebellion.

It’s not clear what’s happened to Major General
Godefroid Niyombere, who led the attempted coup.

His arrest was announced by a presidential spokesman who later recanted.

Pierre Nkurunziza says he’s in charge and pressing ahead with elections next month – against the advice of neighbours and friendly powers.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon urged calm in Burundi and says there’s a need for inclusive dialogue to prevent any further violence.

Twenty people died did in protests against Nkurunziza’s unconstitutional intentions and a further 12 in clashes after the abortive bid to oust him.

The attempted coup was launched when President Pierre Nkurunziza was attending a summit in Tanzania on the crisis in Burundi.

For security reasons, his staff says his exact whereabouts cannot be revealed.

There’s no clarity either about the location of Major General Godefroid Niyombare who claimed to have led the coup.

Washington’s reiterated its recognition of Nkurunziza as the legitimate president of Burundi.

The United Nations says more than 70 000 Burundians have fled into neighbouring countries to escape the violence.

Rival bands of soldiers are fighting in the streets of Bujumbura after President Pierre Nkurunziza was prevented from returning home from a regional summit called to discuss the crisis triggered by his bid to get an unconstitutional third term in office.
The East African Community has condemned what it’s calling a coup and says it won’t stand by if violence does not stop or escalates in Burundi.

President Pierre Nkurunziza is back in Dar es Salaam where he attended a regional summit that determined Burundi is not in any state to hold planned elections next month.
Former intelligence head Major General Godefroid Niyombere, sacked by Nkurunziza earlier this year, says he’s taken control Burundi and suspended parliament because of Nkurunziza’s unacceptable bid to cling to power.
The armed forces head General Prime Niyongabo, however insists the coup has failed and Nkurunziza continues to hold power.
In the streets outside their forces are fighting to settle this dispute.

He was prevented from returning home last night and has returned to Dar es Salaam where he was attending a summit on the crisis triggered by his bid to cling to power unconstitutionally.

East African leaders have called it a coup. But media on ground in Bujumbura are still attaching the word attempted.
President Pierre Nkurunziza’s military commander General Prime Niyongabo says they still control the executive office and have thwarted the coup
But the man sacked earlier this year as intelligence head, Major General Godefroid Niyombere says they’ve taken control of government: sacked Nkurunziza and suspended parliament.
He’s saying the takeover is a response to Nkurunziza’s bid to seek an unconstitutional third term in elections next month

Ends intro

President Pierre Nkunrunziza’s delegation to the summit in Dar es Salaam have abandoned the negoiting table and rushed off with the mobile phones to get information from home.

The presidential spokesman insists the attempted coup has failed.

But police, who have been the president’s backbone, have disappeared from the streets and troops have surrounded strategic sites like the national broadcaster.

Maj General Godefroid Niyombare says the military’s been forced to take control because Nkurunziza’s determination to seek a third mandate in next month’s election is totally unconstitutional.

At least 20 people have died in two weeks of protests against the president clinging to power.
